MAHARASHTRA, INDIA — Iron chains shackled the feet of 11 labourers to prevent them from escaping the well-digging facility for nearly four months. However, through a phenomenal rescue operation, the local police formally released all 11 of them from bonded labour and arrested four suspects on June 17, 2023. -

Far from Slavery, Gowri Is Now a Joyful Grandmother and Bold Survivor Leader
Gowri endured nearly a decade of enslavement, but since her rescue in 2010 we've been walking with her and are now working together to end forced labour. Today she is a joyful grandmother and a bold survivor leader, lobbying the government and directly working to help other freed bonded labourers in South Asia. As IJM celebrates 25 years, Gowri expresses her gratitude for the rescue and rehabilitation she received, noting that because she is free, she can fight for the freedom of others: "We will carry this baton and ensure there are no more bonded labourers in our state and our country." -
