Ukrainian Refugees Flows in Romania and Human Trafficking Trends
Between March 1 and May 31, 2024, International Justice Mission (IJM) implemented an extensive data collection program to understand the risks of trafficking and exploitation faced by Ukrainian refugees in Romania. In total, 40 professionals from 29 IJM Romania partner institutions were interviewed. Additionally, from April to May 2024, a total of 495 Ukrainian refugees responded to an online questionnaire, which aimed to collect information about their experiences in Romania, perceived risks, and willingness to report these risks to the authorities. The data collection is part of the scope of the project “Regional Response to Trafficking in Persons within the Ukraine Crisis”, funded by the Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons, U.S. Department of State, and implemented by IJM. -

Translation has been a key need for our teams in the field. This new technology works without reliance on online language resources because all of the artificial intelligence has been built into it: speech recognition, translation, and speech generation. Unlike Google Translate or other similar services, it does not transmit any part of the conversation, its location, participants, etc., into cyberspace. It also has no recording capability. This is especially important in sensitive conversations about potential criminal activity, personal medical and family issues, etc. -

IJM Romania identifies critical gap that often leaves survivors of trafficking losing their rights
In a rare victory, a young woman who was trafficked to London for sexual exploitation was awarded monetary compensation. As a survivor of modern slavery in the UK, it was Antonia's* legal right to receive the reparation, yet IJM Romania has found that the reality for too many survivors is that they are often left empty handed. -

UK Court Finds Trafficker Guilty of Exploiting Romanian Woman
A UK court found one person guilty of trafficking for their exploitation of a 19-year-old Romanian woman who was trafficked to the UK. This is the third person convicted in the case after two others were found guilty for trafficking last summer.
