Dominican Republic: Congress Modifies Law to End Child Marriage
On December 30, 2020, the Dominican Republic Senate approved changes proposed by the House of Representatives to modify the Civil Code and eliminate all legal exceptions that allow child marriage and early unions in the country. With these changes, Congress is making history and the country continues taking steps to protect children. The country’s President is now reviewing the modifications and may approve and promulgate the law as it was sent by Congress or send it back for further review. -

Two Operations: Four Girls Rescued from Violence by Dominican Authorities
Last week, local police mobilized to perform two rescue operations and protect four survivors of violence. The survivors range in age from 6 to 14 years old and are now safe. Authorities arrested one person so far and are investigating two others. -

International Justice Mission Urges the Dominican Government to Declare Child Marriage Unconstitutional
On June 24th, International Justice Mission (IJM) petitioned the Dominican Supreme Court (also known as the Constitutional Court) to declare child marriage unconstitutional, as it is a violation of the fundamental rights of children and adolescents. Since then, over 15 other civil society organizations and coalitions have joined their voices to demand change. -

Rescue: A Church Speaks Up and A Minor is Freed From Sexual Exploitation
On June 25, the Dominican National Police’s Anti-Trafficking Department, in coordination with the Anti-Trafficking Specialized Prosecutor Office, rescued a 14-year-old Dominican girl from sexual exploitation. This rescue was possible thanks to a local church, which IJM previously trained to recognize this crime within their community, that put its training into action. -

Rescue Operation Amid COVID-19: Six Rescued. Five Arrested.
A minor and five adult women are now free from sexual exploitation after a successful rescue operation on May 23rd. As the sun rose for a new day in lockdown on the Caribbean island, local officials from the Specialized Forces of Touristic Security (CESTUR), National Police, and the Prosecutor’s office, assisted by IJM, arrested five suspects including three Americans Citizens, a Haitian National and a Dominican. -
