The wave of rescues began when IJM assisted police in saving four girls from a private sex trafficking network in Kolkata. The youngest girl was only 13 years old. She and the others were moved around constantly by traffickers who were selling them for sex in homes and apartments—making it very difficult for authorities to pinpoint their location. -

Two 17-Year-Olds Rescued from Kolkata Red-Light District
KOLKATA, INDIA – On June 2, Kolkata Police initiated a rescue operation and requested IJM’s help to find a number of girls suspected to have been trafficked into Sonagachi, one of the largest red-light districts in Kolkata. Together, we were able to rescue two 17-year-old girls who were forced to sell themselves for sex and faced constant physical abuse. Police also arrested two suspects—one brothel madam and one victim’s mother who sold her. -

Second Rescue at Abusive Brick Kiln Frees 328 from Slavery
CHENNAI, INDIA - Late last month, IJM and authorities near Chennai rescued more than 300 people—including 88 children—from bonded labour slavery in a vast and abusive brick kiln. Together we had rescued another 333 people from this same kiln in 2015. The kiln owner who had enslaved them was briefly detained before being released on bail, leaving him free to traffic more families into bondage.
