Survivors Come Together to Fight Child Trafficking
Organizations across Ghana gathered to raise the voices of survivors and educate the community on child trafficking. The Senior Lead for the Global Survivor Network, Josephine Aparo, said, “‘Hope in Freedom’ is rising as leaders in this community, but they are not standing alone. IJM’s Distinctive Response to the Ukrainian Refugee Crisis (European Anti-Trafficking Program-EATP)
6 September 2022 - IJM’s Ukrainian Crisis Response provides essential and unique support to refugees in need through direct accompaniment activities and through various governmental and private entities. IJM collects and combines experiences from working with Ukrainian refugees and with victims of trafficking in cross-border cases from Romania. Based on this diagnostic collaborative casework approach, IJM shares best practices with partners on trauma-informed responses specifically for refugees and trafficking victims. Additionally, IJM is applying data analytics (Fusion Center), information gathering, and innovative digital marketing strategies to help protect the refugee population from trafficking risks. -

New Child-Friendly Spaces to Serve Kids Trafficked on India’s Trains
It is estimated that a child arrives alone at a major railway station in India every five minutes. These children could be seeking work to help their families, running away from abuse, or may simply be orphaned with nowhere else to go. Criminals often prey on vulnerable children, win their trust, and traffic them to other places for labor or sex. This is why the Railway Protection Force’s Anti-Human Trafficking Unit (AHTU) in the state of Karnataka inaugurated India’s first-ever child-friendly spaces at two prominent Bangalore train stations. They’ve named it a <em>Khushi</em> Hub (meaning ‘happiness’) and hope it will transform how children are served and protected long-term. -

Bridging Language Barriers with Cutting-Edge Tech
Translation has been a key need for our teams in the field. This new technology works without reliance on online language resources because all of the artificial intelligence has been built into it: speech recognition, translation, and speech generation. Unlike Google Translate or other similar services, it does not transmit any part of the conversation, its location, participants, etc., into cyberspace. It also has no recording capability. This is especially important in sensitive conversations about potential criminal activity, personal medical and family issues, etc. -

First “Panchayat Against Human Trafficking” Launched in Uttar Pradesh
Baglai’s village council—called a gram panchayat—has been working closely with IJM’s partner Akhil Bharatiya Samaj Sewa Sansthan (ABSSS) on an innovative campaign to protect local children, women, and men from labor exploitation by forming the state’s first-ever “Panchayat Against Human Trafficking” in January 2022. -

Late last year, IJM Odisha partnered with local organizations across the Indian state to support a 10-day bicycle rally that travelled over 1,500 km to raise awareness of human trafficking and forced bonded labour in vulnerable communities. -

When Cindi learned about IJM’s mission, she desperately wanted to save the children who were enslaved and abused. She knew she wasn’t going to be the one kicking down brothel doors, but then an improbable thought came to her: “What about cows?”
