In many cases, these workers have been trapped at factories and worksites—as brutal business owners take advantage of the pandemic to extract more and more forced labour. -

Double Operation Frees 526 from Two Brick Kilns
The case began in mid-March when IJM received information about 282 migrant labourers held in bonded labour at a kiln in Tiruvallur District. These families were from the state of Odisha, in northern India, and had travelled south to Tamil Nadu state under the promise of good jobs and fair wages. They were given advance payments of 20,000 to 30,000 rupees for their work (USD 265-400), which then became escalating debts they would need to repay. -

Sixty-Four Children Among Hundreds Rescued at Brick Kiln During Lockdown
Earlier this week, IJM assisted local authorities in rescuing 281 people from bonded labour at a massive brick kiln. This included 64 children of all ages who were forced to mould heavy bricks alongside their parents. This comes just one week after another operation in this same district freed 360 people from a similar brick kiln and raised critical awareness of migrant labourers trapped in southern India. -
