Appa Rao's second chance at life
Because you believe in freedom and chose to fight for his, Appa Rao is home at last with his family—thank you!
For survivors, freedom is often found in the little things—the small pleasures of life that are taken away when someone is trapped in slavery and exploitation.
For Appa Rao, it’s the family dinners, the long afternoons drinking tea with friends, and playing catch with his grandson that feel the sweetest now that he’s free and home again.
In March 2025, Appa Rao was rescued from bonded labour on a farm in South Asia after more than two decades of terror.
Once free, he faced another heartbreaking challenge—finding his family again.
Appa Rao remained hopeful as news of his rescue and family separation captured the hearts of local media and government alike. Journalists rallied together to raise awareness of his case, while officials worked together to locate his family.
After months of searching across state lines, Appa Rao was miraculously reunited with his daughter, son-in-law, and grandchildren in March 2025.
“I just cried. My husband cried. My father cried,” recalls Sayamma, Appa Rao’s daughter.
Now, Appa Rao is making up for lost time. He’s also healing from the trauma of living in slavery with the help of IJM-supported counselling.
Appa Rao’s story is also a testament to the perseverance of IJM’s team in South Asia who, for more than two decades, have advocated for the rights and freedom of bonded labourers in Tamil Nadu. Their determination over the years is reshaping the way the government handles cases of bonded labour today.
Now, the family enjoys the simple moments they missed together all those years apart.
“I am keeping well,” says Appa. “I am happy because I am back home. I am joyful to be reunited with my daughter and son-in-law.”
Appa Rao is home at last because you believe in freedom and chose to fight for his.
“No one should experience the kind of life I lived,” shares Appa Rao. “No one should face the challenges and struggles that I faced.”
And because you extended such kindness, more people like Appa Rao won’t have to.
