What is the relationship between IJM Canada and IJM?

IJM Canada was incorporated in 2002 with a vision of engaging Canadians in IJM's global mission to seek justice for the oppressed. International Justice Mission was founded in 1997 and has its global headquarters in Washington, D.C. IJM Canada is joined by three other national affiliates of IJM: IJM UK, IJM The Netherlands and IJM Germany. IJM Canada is governed by an independent Board of Directors, but is very closely aligned with IJM in vision, values and strategies.

IJM describes itself as a faith-based organization. What does that mean?

In the tradition of abolitionist William Wilberforce and transformational leaders like Mother Theresa and Martin Luther King, Jr., IJM’s work is founded on the Christian call to justice articulated in the Bible (Isaiah 1:17): Seek justice, protect the oppressed, defend the orphan, plead for the widow. IJM’s staff members are Christians from a variety of traditions who are motivated by this call to seek justice for the oppressed. We find strength and encouragement in sharing a spiritual life together. We provide assistance to victims of injustice regardless of their religious beliefs, ethnicity, or gender, and are grateful for the support of all people of good will.

What is IJM Canada's relationship with local governments and NGOs in the countries where you conduct your operations?

IJM Canada is a non-partisan, non-governmental, registered charitable organization. IJM operates with governmental approval and acknowledgment in all countries in which it is active, and depends on local government and NGO partners to work successfully.

Why is IJM Canada based in London, Ontario?

Like other leading Christian charities such as Compassion Canada and Navigators of Canada, IJM Canada has found the setting in London, Ontario to be conducive to effective and efficient operation of our organization.  The cost of living is significantly lower in London than other centres such as Toronto, Ottawa or Vancouver, allowing us to devote a higher percentage of our donors' funds to our international programs.

Does IJM Canada receive funding from the Canadian government?

At this point in time, IJM Canada receives no funding from the Canadian government, Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) or any other government agency.
